The ATS 2023 Convention Committee is very excited to announce that this year’s convention will once again be a live meeting and that, finally, after years of anticipation, we will be visiting many of the very historic and beautiful observatories and museums in Italy! One major destination will be the Vatican Observatory at Castel Gandolfo, near Rome.

The Vatican Observatory is one of the oldest active astronomical observatories in the world, with its roots going back to 1582 and the Gregorian reform of the calendar.

While visiting the Vatican Observatory, you may want to explore the Pontifical Villas and the Papal Palace at Castel Gandolfo which  offer a glimpse into the rich history and artistry of the Vatican.

Dear ATS members and guests!

The ATS 2023 Convention Committee is very excited to announce that this year’s convention will once again be a live meeting and that, finally, after years of anticipation, we will be visiting many of the very historic and beautiful observatories and museums in Italy! One major destination will be the Vatican Observatory at Castel Gandolfo, near Rome. 

We are planning two days of paper sessions* followed by (at least) three days of tours to many exceptional observatories and museums around Italy. As always, we do not pick a topic for our paper sessions and we always encourage a wide range of topics related to the history of the telescope and astronomical instruments, plus historic observatories, and of course stories about past, current and future restorations and ‘saves’. Italy has an excellent train system and that will be our main mode of transportation between cities for the tours. We have several members in Italy that are working on our committee to help us organize a really spectacular experience, and of course the weather in early October is typically very pleasant in Italy.

So Save the Date – October 9-13, and your first destination will be Rome! We will have much more information in the coming few weeks.
